Questions and Answers about Fragrance Oils

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

There is always more to learn about fragrance oils and what makes an aroma. It is especially important as most products such as soaps, lotions, and candles contain various fragrances. Thus, follow along below to learn more about P&J oils and the answers to top fragrance questions!

WHAT ARE FRAGRANCE OILS?

A fragrance oil is a manufactured product designed to mimic the aromatic properties of the item its named after. P&J Premium Grade Fragrance oils are highly concentrated, enhanced formulations designed by master perfumers with more than 30 years in the industry. Their IFRA certifications ensure that our fragrance oils meet the Premium Grade standards and are the best quality oils available on the market.

ARE FRAGRANCES SKIN SAFE?

Our entire line of fragrance oils are Premium Grade, also known as Cosmetic Grade, which means they were formulated for, and deemed safe for use in topical applications per FDA and IFRA guidelines and standards. Additionally, all the aroma compounds used in premium grade fragrance oil manufacturing are rigorously tested and approved by the FDA for this usage. Our line is also phthalate, paraben, and acetone free. Though you can use our oils for diffusion, they are actually made specifically for cosmetic applications like soaps, lotions, bath bombs, perfumery, and hair products.

That being said, like with any new product, we suggest performing a small patch test prior to regular use to ensure you’ll have no natural sensitivity to the product. To patch test, simply rub 1 drop of oil into the sensitive skin in the crook or bend of your arm. If no irritation occurs, you should be fine to proceed with use!

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?

Fragrance oils in general are made up of a mixture of over 100 natural and synthetic ingredients specifically engineered for varying purposes (e.g., burning oil has a high alcohol content whereas premium quality is designed to be skin safe, and has little to no alcohol content). The exact ingredients as well as manufacturing procedures are considered "trade secrets"-just like perfumes- and are protected by the FDA so we are sadly unable to go into much detail regarding specifics.

However, we can identify the staple ingredients approved by the IFRA for use in fragrance oil manufacturing! These ingredients consist of; plant-based carrier oils and essential oils; Aldehydes; Esters; and some variation of amines, ethers, ketones, lactones, terpenes and thiones. The above ingredients can be simplified in that fragrance oil manufacturing includes essential oils, aroma chemicals, and aromatic resins. Of these three types of ingredients, there are several layers of ingredients used to create the finished oil. Due to the amount of engineering involved in designing a scent, it is treated similarly to a commercial recipe in that the exact ingredients and percentages are protected and cannot be disclosed.

WHAT DOES PREMIUM GRADE MEAN?

Per the IFRA guidelines, there are three grades of  aromas produced for today’s fragrance market – Burning Grade, Manufacturers Grade, and Premium Grade.

  • Burning Grade is the lowest quality and should only be used in candle formulations or diffusion.
  • Manufacturers Grade can be used when heavily diluted, such as in laundry detergent and cleaning supplies.
  • Premium Grade is thoroughly tested and meets all qualification standards for use in all skin and body care applications as well as direct topical use.

All P&J Trading Fragrance Oils are classified as Premium Grade, and therefore completely safe to use in all applications for which oils are suited.

DO P&J FRAGRANCES HAVE PHTHALATES OR PARABENS?

Phthalates are chemicals designed to soften plastic and can damage certain parts of our bodies like the lungs or kidneys. Parabens are known to disrupt hormones in the body and harm reproductive organs. Thankfully, our entire line of premium fragrances are completely phthalate and paraben free. As our oils are composed primarily of aroma chemicals, aroma compounds, and some essential oils, which we specifically engineered as phthalate free.
